The Hornets traveled to Pembroke on Saturday to compete in the MSTCA Division 3 state relays where they had a decent showing of 13 points, which was good enough for 13th overall in the event. Tewksbury was the winner with a total of 66 points collectively.

“Relays is such a fun event for all of athletes as it is a meet totally based on team depth in all areas of our sport,” said Spinney. “We have a lot to be proud of despite what one might notice from the scoring total. Personal records and some character building were part of the experience today and in my opinion, that is more important than the total points we scored.”

Pole vault relay wins state title

Ten of the Hornet points came from the victorious pole vault relay team of Joey McCarthy, Jack Murphy and Alex Carpenter who had a collective total of 27’0” to win the event by a full foot over 2nd place Tewksbury. McCarthy led the way with a 9’6” vault, Murphy with 9’0” and Carpenter 8’6”.

“Joey has been a force at the pole vault this season for us,” stated Spinney. “Not only is he consistent with this vaults, he is the leader of the group. He helps others improve with his suggestions and critiques. Our whole group is definitely improving overall in a large part to his love of the event.”
