Hornet XC splits with Vikings on Senior Day

NORTH READING — On Sept. 24, the North Reading High School cross country teams celebrated their seniors on Senior Day, with a strong showing against Triton at Harold Parker State Forest. The girls’ team had their most dominant showing in recent memory as they defeated the Vikings 17-46. The boys team had a strong effort but the Vikings were a bit too strong as the Hornets fell 21-34.
Senior co-captain Quin Kelly, junior Addie Kelly and 8th grader Sophia Garibotto took the top 3 spots in the race in times of 20:55, 22:00 and 22:01 respectively. Quin Kelly is currently undefeated in competition this season with one regular season race to go.
“When you have three runners competing at a high level, it makes your team very competitive in every single race,” said Hornets head coach Ryan Spinney. “Quin has been a machine over the last two years with her steady, stellar races and to see Addie and Sophia enter the mix, we are becoming a very tough opponent at the top.”
Junior co-captain Riley MacDonald and her 8th grade sister Bridget finished 5th and 6th in the race in times of 23:57 and 24:26, respectively. Sophomore Chloe DeAngelis (7th, 24:47), junior Cara Ward (8th, 25:43), junior Gabby Montanye (11th, 25:35), freshman Verity Modeen (12th, 26:41), freshman Ruby Davidson (14th, 28:57), 8th grader Emily Cappella (15th, 29:13), senior Abby Meier (17th, 30:58), freshman Ilma Gurda (18th, 34:36), sophomore Samantha Mejia (19th, 37:34), junior Annalee Miller (20th, 37:35) and 8th grader Tabitha Begley (21st, 38:17) rounded out the Hornet competitors in the race.
The Hornets now are 2-1 on the season before finishing up CAL Kinney Division competition against Pentucket on Oct. 1 after press time.

In the boys’ meet, junior co-captain Nalo Benedict once again led the Hornets with a strong race as he placed 2nd overall in a time of 18:20. Junior Jacob Ye continued his strong season with a 5th place effort in a time of 20:11.
Senior Gerard Jorda (8th, 20:46), freshman Zachary Mahoney (9th, 20:50), 8th grader Aidan Steele (10th, 20:57), sophomore Cole Donohue (11th, 21:03), freshman Dominic Spada (12th, 21:16), sophomore Jason Hawley (15th, 21:43), sophomore Cooper Mascolo (19th, 23:38), 8th grader James Boesch (22nd, 26:46), freshman Declan Walsh (24th, 27:04), freshman Cole Verdonck (25th, 27:47), 8th grader Hugo DaSilva (26th, 28:09) and freshman Declan Goshey (27th, 28:15) rounded out the Hornet competitors in the contest.
“We competed very well today,” said Spinney. “Lots of personal and seasonal bests across the board and that’s all we can ask for. Very proud of the effort put in by everyone today.”
The Hornets fell to 0-3 on the season and they will have one more race against Pentucket on Oct. 1.
