MacLellan sets school record in the two-mile

ANDOVER — Following an admirable attempt to win a repeat State Relay Championship on Jan. 14, at which the Hornets had the settle for 10th place, the NRHS girls’ track and field team fell to a strong Triton Viking team on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at the Andover High School field house. Despite the loss, there were some impressive performances on the track.

Captain Lindsay MacLellan dominated the two mile run with a new school record time of 11:28.14. The performance moved MacLellan up from a previous rank of 3rd all-time in the event behind Elizabeth Short (class of 2008) and Nicole Roberts (class of 2014) who ran 11:37.35 and 11:35.78 respectively and went on to run collegiately at Dartmouth College and Amherst College. Lindsay will continue in their footsteps as she will go on to compete at Lehigh University this fall.

“Congratulations to Lindsay on this incredible feat and good luck on her endeavor to lower her record through the remainder of the season coming up over the next month,” said head coach Sotirios Pintzopoulos.

The meet started well for the Hornets as the trio of Soultana Tsaparlis (4’6”), Isabella Parrett (4’6”) and Jolie Femia (4’4”) swept the high jump and scored nine points for the team. The Vikings hit back in the shot put taking 1st and 2nd place. Katelyn Gorgenyi took 3rd in the event with a throw of 27’ 11”.

The Hornets responded in kind with a 1-3 finish in the dash as Gorgenyi won the event in a speedy 7.44 seconds followed by Ava McIntyre (8.34) in third. Gorgenyi’s time moves her up from 5th to 2nd all time in school history.

From that point on, the Vikings pulled ahead, winning the remainder of the six events on the track.

In the 55 meter hurdles the Hornets kept things close with Jessica Hill (10.24) and Jolie Femia (10.34) taking 2nd and 3rd. In the one mile, Annalise Butler (6:12.2) and Caitlin Raimo (6:13.2) continued to keep things close with a 2nd and 3rd place finish.

In the 300 meters, Ellie Janasiewicz (48.4) took 3rd. In the 600 meters, Anne MacLellan (1:59.6) took 3rd. The Vikings capped things off by sweeping the 1000 Meters and handily winning the 4×400 meter relay.

The Hornets next meet took place on Monday at the Reggie Lewis Center against the undefeated Newburyport Clippers, which would prove to be an even more challenging head-to-head matchup than their meet against Triton. Look for that article in next week’s Transcript.
