NORTH READING — On April 26, the NRHS girls’ lacrosse team snapped their five game-losing streak as they edged host Tewksbury, 12-11, in a non-league game.
North Reading improved to 2-0 in non-league contest.
“It was a pretty exciting game,” said head coach Matt Costello. “We came out strong but had some mental lapses that allowed them to take the lead. We then played well late.”
The Redmen led, 7-5, at the half and were able to increase its lead to 10-6 in the second stanza. However, the Hornets then went on a 6-0 run to go up 12-10.
Tewksbury scored with just under a minute left to cut the lead to one but the Hornets were able to hold on.
Brianne Slattery led the offense with five goals while Faith Newton had two goals and one assist. Shea Tully and Alaina Driscoll both scored twice while Jenna DiNapoli had one goal and one assist.
Kaitlyn Supple had eight saves in net.
On Monday afternoon, the Hornet lost, 15-8, at home to Hamilton-Wenham. With the defeat, the Hornets record fell to 3-6 overall and 1-6 in the Cape Ann League. The Generals, meanwhile, improved to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the league.
“They have a good, solid team,” said Costello. “They are ranked in the top seven or eight in the Division 4 power rankings this week so that is a high caliber type of team.”
The Hornet defense struggled with General star, Evelyn Bernard, who scored a game-high seven goals.
Newton led North Reading with four goals while single goals were scored by Mia Pittore, Slattery, Callie MacLellan and DiNapoli.
Supple, tied her season-high for saves with 14. Tully had two assists.
The next game for the Hornets will be on Friday as they host Ipswich at 4:15 p.m. They will then have the next five days off as their next game isn’t until May 11 as they visit Triton. That game will also start at 4:15 p.m.
