NORTH READING — On Oct. 21, the North Reading High girls’ soccer team hosted Hamilton-Wenham on a cool, sunny day. The Hornets ended up tying the Generals, 3-3.

With that result, the Hornets record went to 10-1-4 overall and in the Cape Ann League. North Reading extended their unbeaten streak to nine games as they haven’t lost since Sept. 18 to Lynnfield. The Generals went to 12-0-2 overall and 7-0-1 in the league.

North Reading had to rally in this one as they were behind 2-0 at halftime. Savannah Gauron put the guests on the scoreboard 20:42 into the first half.

Margot Bryce Morris then made it 2-0 at the 26:33 mark.

Allie Lanciani got the locals on the scoreboard 11:54 into the second half assisted by Bella Mawn.

Gauron increased the lead to two again 30:51 in.

The Hornets responded immediately scoring just 18 seconds later as Kiersten Higgins scored. Sara Suny had the assist.

Taylor Osterlind, had the game-tying tally at the 32:16 mark assisted by Higgins.

Hannah Frew was the Hornets’ goalkeeper in the opening half as she had two saves. In the second half, Maya Grossi made five stops.

On Oct. 16, the Hornets edged host Georgetown, 1-0.

The lone goal came 2:45 into the second half by Reilly Tassinari assisted by Lanciani.

Frew played the entire game in net and made three saves to post the shutout.

“They created a compact defensive plan working to keep us off the scoreboard,” pointed out Hornets head coach Sean Killeen. “In the first half, the possession advantage was in our favor but we had difficulty creating the final scoring chance.”

Killeen was happy with his defense.

“The defense continues to play very well and kept them away from the goal,” he said. “But on a few counters and dead-balls, Frew was ready for the task.”

On Oct. 23, the Hornets visit Essex Tech at 4:30 p.m. looking for the season sweep over the Hawks, who they beat, 5-3, back on Sept. 23.

North Reading’s last two games are non-league ones. On Oct. 25, they visit Auburn at 11 a.m.They then host Bishop Fenwick on Oct. 29 at 6 p.m.

The Hornets are ranked 10th in the MIAA Division 3 power rankings heading into this week. The top 32 teams at the end of the regular season automatically qualify for the state tournament.
