By STEPHEN MARTELLUCCI
AMESBURY — On Tuesday afternoon, the North Reading High girls’ soccer team visited Amesbury. They came home with a 3-0 shutout win over the Red Hawks.
With that victory, the Hornets’ record improved to 10-2 overall and 9-2 in the Cape Ann League.
North Reading, who won its fifth-straight game, scored twice in the first half and once more in the second.
Marissa Montana got the locals on the scoreboard 11:25 in assisted by Julie Scammon.
Twenty minutes later, sophomore Kierstin Higgins made it 2-0 with Sara Suny getting the assist.
Bella Cannalonga had the second half tally 25:52 in and it was unassisted.
Hornet goal-keeper, Maggie Schulz, made six saves for her ninth shutout of the year.
“The field was small and Amesbury countered well,” said Hornets head coach Sean Killen. “I was pleased with how the unit is working hard together.”
Killeen also praised Schulz.
“Maggie made a couple of point-blank saves that not only preserved the shutout but protected the result,” he said, about the senior co-captain.
On Oct. 5, the Hornets blanked host Triton 5-0 up in Byfield. That win gave the team a season sweep over the Vikings as they won the first game against them 7-0 back on Sept. 8 at home.
North Reading scored three times in the opening 40 minutes and twice in the second half.
Cannalonga got the scoring going 2:32 into the game. She was assisted by Alexandra Sfikas.
“It was good to get the early goal,” said Killeen. “It was also great to see Bella score her second goal in as many games.”
Sfikas then assisted on the second goal nine minutes in and that was scored by Higgins.
Higgins then made it 3-0 at the 35:50 mark with Maya Ortiz picking up the assist.
Sfikas then had her third point of the afternoon scoring an unassisted goal 7:08 into the second half.
The final goal was scored by Taylor Osterlind 27:04 into the second half and that tally was assisted by Belle Lazure whose corner kick was headed in by Osterlind.
“That’s an ice cream for Taylor,” said Killeen. “We have been trying to improve our production off Lazure’s corners and free kicks and it was a pretty goal.”
Schulz made three saves in net.
On Oct. 12, the Hornets have their Senior Night as they take on Pentucket at 6 p.m. Before the game, the team’s 12th-graders will be honored.
On Oct. 16, the Hornets will host rival Lynnfield at 4:45 p.m. The Pioneers won the first meeting, 2-1, on Sept. 21 as the Hornets look to split the season series.
