NORTH READING — On Tuesday afternoon, the North Reading High girls’ tennis team beat Pentucket, 4-1, at home on a warm, sunny day. With that result, the Hornets improved to 9-5 overall and 6-4 in the Cape Ann League as they completed the season sweep over the Panthers.

“It was a good win after we lost the day before,” said North Reading head coach Matt Tiberii.

Althea Bradley won at first singles, 6-0, 6-1, while Matilda Ton won, 6-1, 6-0, at second singles.

Shenaya Verma played at third singles and she won, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6, as the match was already decided so it was a 10-point final set.

In doubles action, the first team of Aniya Taneja and Addison Stetson won, 6-2, 6-2.

The second pairing of Juliet Wasilewski  and Mary Doble lost 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 as this was another first to 10 final set.

The day before, the Hornets were edged by Ipswich, 3-2, also at home.

“We didn’t have the depth that they have,” admitted Tiberii.

Bradley won, 6-3, 6-4, while Ton also won, 7-6 (7-4 in the tiebreaker), 6-0.

Verma lost, 6-1, 6-1, at third singles.

Stetson and Taneja fell, 6-0, 6-2, while Wasilewski and Doble also lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

On May 8, the Hornets beat Rockport, 4-1, at home.

Bradley won, 6-1, 6-0, while Ton shut out her opponent, 6-0, 6-0. Verma fell, 6-3, 6-1.

Stetson and Taneja won with matching 6-2 scores while the duo of Karina Mountain and Doble won, 6-2, 6-3.

“We did a good job of keeping the ball in play,” said Tiberii.

On May 7, also at home, the Hornets beat Triton, 4-1, to complete the season sweep over the Vikings.

Bradley shut out her opponent, 6-0, 6-0, while Ton easily won, 6-1, 6-0. Verma won 6-1, 6-2, at third singles.

Stetson and Taneja won, 6-0, 6-2, while the second team of Amelia Invencio and Shriya Upadhyay lost, 3-6, 7-5, 10-5 in the 10-point tiebreaker.

“That was the varsity debut for Amelia and Shriya,” pointed out Tiberii. “It is nice that they were able to earn their varsity letters.”

On Thursday, the Hornets visit Lynnfield at 4 p.m. trying to get a split of the season series. They then host Hamilton-Wenham, also at 4 p.m., on Monday.

On May 20, they host Melrose in a non-league match at 4 p.m. That is the Hornets’ Senior Day as the four 12th-graders will be honored.

North Reading then wraps up the regular season on May 21 as they host Swampscott in another non-league match. That match will also start at 4 p.m.

The Hornets are seeded 20th in the MIAA power rankings heading into this week.
