Update after press time: North Reading defeats Amesbury 4-1 (April 28)

NORTH READING — On April 17, the North Reading High girls’ tennis team lost, 4-1, at home to Bedford. With that non-league defeat, the Hornets fell to 3-4.
“I was very impressed with them,” said Hornets head coach Matt Tiberii. “I coached a lot of them at Woburn Racket Club so I am very familiar with them.”
Althea Bradley won at first singles, 6-1, 6-2 for the team’s lone victory. Matilda Ton fell,7-6 (9-7 in the tiebreaker), 6-2, at second singles.
Madelyn Barnes-Felix lost at third singles, 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles play, the first team of Aniya Taneja and Angelina Zeng fell, 6-3, 6-0. Addison Stetson and Shenaya Verma also lost in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, at second doubles.
Bedford plays in one of the top leagues in the state as they are in the Dual County League.
“They should make a deep run in the Division 3 tournament,” said Tiberii, about the Buccaneers.
The day before the Bedford match, the Hornets fell to Newburyport, 4-1, on the road.
Bradley lost with matching 6-4 scores at first singles while Ton won, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3 in the tiebreaker).
Verma played third singles and she lost, 6-3, 6-3.
Stetson and Taneja lost, 6-0, 6-0, while Barnes-Felix and Karina Mountain were also shutout, 6-0, 6-0, at second doubles.
“They have a couple of strong doubles teams,” said Tiberii, about the Clippers.
The Hornets fell to 1-3 in the Cape Ann League with that loss.
The match that was postponed against Methuen on April 15 will be made up on April 30 at home as North Reading will play three matches in three days.
On April 28, the Hornets visit Amesbury. The next day, North Reading hosts Pentucket. All three matches will start at 4 p.m.
