Spikers sweep Georgetown 3-0 on Senior Night
By STEPHEN MARTELLUCCI

LYNNFIELD — First place in the Cape Ann League Kinney Division was on the line Monday night as the North Reading High volleyball team visited rival Lynnfield looking for a season sweep.
However, the Pioneers won, 3-0, to earn a split of the season series. The Pioneers won the three sets, 25,22, 25,10, and 25 18.
With that loss, the Hornets record dropped to 14-2 overall and 12-2 in the Cape Ann League. Lynnfield, meanwhile, improved to 16-2 overall and 11-1 in the league as they won their eighth-straight match.
“They didn’t make many errors and we were not as strong as the first time we played them,” said Hornets head coach Mike Milone. “I was proud of the way our team fought. We made them earn it.”
Milone was pleased with the play of senior Emilia Yeakel and her play at the net and the setting of junior Willow Koepke.
On Senior Night on Oct. 15, the news was much better as the Hornets shut out visiting Georgetown, 3-0. Before the match, the five Hornet 12th-graders — Lucy Wells, Emilia Yeakel, Sydney Scholz, Emery Cordero and Grace Fagner — were honored.
“All five of them played the entire match,” pointed out Milone. “It turned out to be a good night.”
North Reading won the three sets, 25-14, 25-14, and 25-14, as they completed the season sweep over the Royals.
Senior, Ella Maier, had seven service aces and 10 kills while fellow 12th-grader, Emery Cordero had 11 digs. Koepke had a team-high 22 assists.
On Oct. 23, the Hornets visit Triton at 5:15 p.m. up in Byfield. The Hornets beat the Vikings, 3-0, in the first meeting on Sept. 29 as they look for the season sweep.
The next night, they welcome Masconomet in the regular-season finale. That non-league match will also start at 5:15 p.m.
The Hornets entered this week ranked 10th in the MIAA Division 3 power rankings. The top 32 teams at the end of the regular season, automatically qualify for the state tournament. The playoff seedings will come out later next week.
