Park Street bridge road closure begins May 5

NORTH READING — On Monday, May 5, the Department of Public Works along with its contractor, Kodiak Corporation, will begin work to replace the Park Street bridge that carries Park Street over Martins Brook in the vicinity of the intersection with Winter Street and Freedom Drive.

As a result, Park Street – between Winter Street and Main Street – will be completely closed to all through traffic for approximately two months during the reconstruction project, according to information provided by the DPW.

Park Street residents will be permitted access from Main Street, but will not be allowed to pass over the bridge until it is fully re-opened and residents should expect delays when traveling along the detour route. (A map of the detour route is printed inside today’s Transcript.)

Emergency vehicles and school buses will not be allowed passage over the bridge during construction.

BUS STOP CHANGES

Due to the bridge closure, two bus stops will need to be moved to the corner of Park Street and Damon Street for at least the remainder of this school year. These bus stops are Little School Bus 11, presently located at 306 Park St., and MS/HS Bus 12, presently located at 294 Park St. The School Department advises families to expect delays at all other bus stops and routes due to the need for buses to make detours to get around town. Parents with any questions or concerns may contact their child’s school or the office of School Superintendent Dr. Patrick Daly.

No on-street parking will be permitted during construction. Work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Detail police officers will be present during certain construction activities.

SUPERSTRUCTURE REPLACEMENT

This construction project is a superstructure replacement that is part of DPW’s bridge and culvert replacement plan to preserve town assets and improve its drainage infrastructure. The bid was awarded to the Kodiak Corporation for $716,349, and the town’s Engineering Consultant, TEC, Inc., will oversee the project.

Questions about this project should be directed to Town Engineer Dan O’Donnell by either email at: dodonnell@northreadingma.gov or by phone: 978-357-5226.
