NORTH READING — Volunteer drivers who are willing to help local seniors and residents who cannot drive due to medical restrictions get to their doctors appointments are being sought by the town.
Since this program was launched in July 2023 by the Senior Center, volunteers have helped keep North Reading residents healthy by providing over 1,000 one-way rides to medical appointments.
Volunteers will provide trips in their own vehicles for North Reading residents to reach doctors’ appointments out-of-town, usually ranging from the Burlington and Melrose area to Boston. The commitment is one to four trips per month, usually on weekdays during daytime hours for scheduled medical appointments. Volunteers will be notified of incoming requests and simply sign up only for the dates and trips that work for them.
Mileage reimbursement is available, and volunteer hours may result in property tax discounts for eligible North Reading residents. Volunteers will be CORI and RMV checked by the town of North Reading.
