Egg cartons are a common household item, but their recyclability largely depends on the material they are made from. The three main types of egg cartons: paperboard, plastic, and styrofoam, each require different handling.
Paperboard egg cartons are generally recyclable in most curbside programs. They are made from recycled paper and can often be processed again. However, you must ensure the carton is clean and free of any food residue before placing it in the recycling bin. Typically these cartons can also be composted as they break down easily.
Plastic egg cartons are often made from PET plastic (#1) or other recyclable plastics like #5. Both #1 and #5 plastics are accepted in North Reading, but it is still important to check that the carton is clean before recycling.
Styrofoam egg cartons, unfortunately, are rarely recyclable. Styrofoam is not accepted in a majority of municipal recycling programs due to its environmental impact and the challenges of processing it. These cartons are better off being reused for crafts, storage, or gardening projects if possible, rather than being discarded in the trash.
By taking these steps, you can ensure your egg cartons are disposed of in the most environmentally friendly way possible and make a significant impact in reducing your personal waste.
