Reducing the amount of waste we send to incinerators is crucial for protecting the environment and public health. Incinerators contribute to air pollution by releasing harmful toxins and greenhouse gases and destroy materials that could otherwise be recycled or composted. By adopting three changes in your daily habits, you can help minimize the impact of incinerators:
Choose reusables over disposables. Single-use items like paper towels, coffee pods, and disposable razors add up quickly in the waste stream. By switching to reusable alternatives such as washable cloths, refillable coffee filters, and durable safety razors, you not only cut down on waste but also may save money in the long run.
Dispose of hazardous materials properly. Household hazardous waste such as cleaning chemicals and many batteries require special handling and should never be sent to the incinerator. By properly disposing of hazardous substances, you prevent harmful toxins from being released into the air or contaminating landfills. One disposal option is the town’s Household Hazardous Waste Day, held each fall. More information can be found on the Recycling and Solid Waste Division’s website (https://www.northreadingma.gov/recycling-and-solid-waste-division).
Rethink your consumption habits. The best way to reduce waste is to prevent it in the first place. This starts with being mindful of what you buy. Opt for products with minimal packaging or seek out items sold in bulk. Avoid impulse buys, and consider borrowing, renting, or purchasing second hand items instead of always buying new.
By incorporating these practices into your daily routine, you can send less waste to the incinerator and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment. Every small change adds up, making a big difference in the long run.
