When do we celebrate Earth Day? (This year: April 12!)

By JOHN ROGERS

The first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970, brought together millions of Americans and helped ignite a broad understanding of environmental challenges and solutions. It also helped catalyze the creation of laws and policies that in the decades since have dramatically improved our air and water quality, reduced threats to public health, protected species, and preserved landscapes nationwide. Earth Day has officially happened on that same day of the year ever since.

But this year we invite you to celebrate early, on Saturday, April 12 (given the timing of the school break later in the month). That day will bring an Earth Day Celebration for kids and adults, with activities and conversations about water, energy, transportation, composting, recycling, and more, cosponsored by the Sustainability Committee and Flint Memorial Library. Mark your calendars, plan to drop by the library’s Activity Room anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., and watch the Transcript for more details.

Even better: don’t wait! There are tremendous opportunities in making every drop of water, every electron, every gallon of gas, and every material go further, and power in working together on solving big issues that affect our health, our wallets, and our environment. That means that every day is the best day to celebrate Earth Day – by finding new ways to improve sustainability in our lives and in our community.

And the April 12 Earth Day Celebration can help you think about ways to keep the celebration going all year round.

Content for the Sustainability Corner is provided periodically to the Transcript by members of the town’s Sustainability Committee.
