Margaret E. Hardy, 85

Known for her wit, sass, compassion and love of family

NORTH READING — Margaret  E. “Peggy” (MacGibbon) Hardy, 85, of North Reading and formerly of Melrose, died Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at Bear Mountain of Reading. She was the loving wife of the late Noel Hardy.

Born in Malden on October 28, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Margaret (McClellan) MacGibbon. She was raised in Wakefield and was a graduate of Wakefield Memorial High School. Peggy worked for many years at Cerretani’s in Melrose, which became Shaw’s, and in later years she worked at the local Laundromat. She was lovingly referred to as the “Mayor” because she knew everyone.

Peggy had a big, beautiful smile and was known for her wit, her sass and her compassion that made people feel welcome. She had a strong love of God and she had a great love for her family. Peggy loved to knit, to read, doing crossword puzzles and scratch tickets. She enjoyed various church activities and was a member of the Sunday Night Bowling League in Wakefield for many years.

Family members include her loving sons, Steven M. Hardy and John S. Hardy and daughters, Lyn Hardy Wilson, Nancy E. Hardy and Christina M. Hardy; brothers, Robert MacGibbon, pre-deceased by David and Donald MacGibbon; pre-deceased by sisters, Patricia Meuse, Ruth Crivello and Dottie O’Keeffe. She was the beloved grandmother of 18 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Her memorial service was held at the Trinity Evangelical Church, 105 Haverhill Street, North Reading, on Saturday, February 5. There were no calling hours.
