LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield High boys’ tennis team beat guest North Reading, 4-1, on a sunny, warm day on Monday afternoon.
With that victory, the Pioneers improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Cape Ann League.
Shea McCarthy won, 6-1, 6-2, at first singles while Shlok Kudrimoti fell in three sets at second singles. He won the first set, 6-4, but lost 7-6 (7-5 in the tiebreaker) and 10-6 in the 10-point final set.
“We cliched the match by that point so they just played a ten-point final set,” explained Lynnfield head coach Joe Dunn.
Matt Reinold won, 6-2, 6-1, at third singles.
In doubles action, the first team of Raffi Arkun and Rowan Bayer won, 6-0, 6-2. The second team of Ritvik Mahajan and Brady Trippe won in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.
“North Reading has a very good team with two of the matches going to a third set,” said Dunn.
In a non-league match on April 10, the Pioneers won at Beverly, 5-0.
McCarthy won in shutout fashion, 6-0, 6-0, while Kudrimoti won, 6-0, 6-2, at second singles.
Trippe played third singles that day and he won, 6-1, 6-2.
Arkun and Reinold won, 6-1, 6-0, while Mahajan and Andee Shieh also won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.
“I was expecting a stronger challenge from them,” admitted Dunn. “We played them last year but they lost their top two players from that team.”
On April 9, the Pioneers beat visiting Ipswich 4-1, on a chilly windy day.
McCarthy shut out his opponent again, 6-0, 6-0, while Kudrimoti won, 6-1, 6-0.
Bayer played third singles and he lost, 7-5, 6-3.
In doubles action, the first duo of Arkun and Reinold won with matching 6-3 scores. The second pairing of Emile Coumans and Ash Mahajian won with matching, 6-1 scores.
“Ipswich graduated several of their starters from last year,” pointed out Dunn. “They have a young team with some talent that should be very good next year.”
On Wednesday, the Pioneers host Pentucket at 3:30 p.m.
They then have the April Vacation Week off next week before returning to action on April 30, 3:30 p.m. at home against Mystic Valley.
