LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield high football team begins their season this week with tryouts/practice starting on Friday.
The Pioneers will play a nine-game regular season, including the 66th Thanksgiving Day game against rival North Reading on Nov. 27, 10 a.m. at Pioneer Stadium.
The first game of the regular season will be on Friday, Sept. 12 at Shawsheen Valley Tech. The Rams are coming off a 13-0 undefeated season in which they won the Div. 5 Super Bowl, 14-0 over Foxboro.
Lynnfield’s home-opener will be on Friday, Sept. 19 when they welcome Wakefield to town. The Pioneers won last year’s matchup with the Warriors, 34-13, but Wakefield ended last season on a six-game winning streak and will be improved this year.
Lynnfield went 9-2 last year, coming up just short in the Div. 6 Elite 8 with a heartbreaking 36-34 loss in overtime to Fairhaven. It was their fist loss since the season-opener against North Attleboro as Lynnfield had won eight in a row. They finished the season with a 43-36 win over the Hornets. Lynnfield has won three straight Turkey Day games.
The Pioneers will have two scrimmages against Peabody (Aug. 23) and Melrose (Aug. 29) to prep for the season. Lynnfield will be working in plenty of newcomers to the starting lineup as they graduated 19 players from last year’s decorated senior class including the Cape Ann League Player of the Year, QB Ty Adamo. The Pioneers will also need to replace CAL Baker Offensive Player of the Year, Madux Iovinelli (WR/LB), Special Teams Player of the Year, Jesse Dorman (WR/DB) and Defensive Player of the Year, Jared Bernabei (RB/LB), along with fellow All-Stars Massimo LoGrasso (K), Iain McCarthy (LB/WR), Walter Radulski (OL/DL) and George Lambros (DB/WR).
Ready to take over at quarterback is senior Matt Tracy. He will be one of four captains in 2025 along with Luke DiSilvio (DB/WR), Ben Gazit (WR/DL) and Dan Lemieux (WR/DB).
The Pioneers will need to revamp a new starting line and plenty of skill position players but are certainly up for the challenge in head coach Pat Lamusta’s eighth season at the helm of his alma mater. Lamusta’s team has made the state tournament for three straight seasons.
Lynnfield’s league play will start on Sept. 26 with a home game against Ipswich.
