MELROSE—On Monday afternoon, the Melrose High girls’ lacrosse team beat Stoneham, 18-9, on the road on a cool, cloudy, windy day. With that victory, Melrose improved to 12-4 overall and 7-3 in the Middlesex League.

Entering this week, Melrose was ranked ninth in the MIAA Division 2 power rankings. (The top 32 teams at the end of the regular season automatically qualify for the tournament.)

On May 28, the brackets will come out for Div. 2 playoffs and Melrose, who will get to host in the first round, will see who they will open up with next week.

On Monday, Melrose had no problem keeping far ahead of the Spartans who fell to 3-14 overall and 0-9 in the league.

“We did really well,” said Melrose head coach Alicia Geiter. “We have a lot of different players score. Stoneham is an improving team.”

Melrose led 14-5 at the half. Chloe Arnold led the offense with four goals while Anna Mathews had three goals and one assist. Jill Frawley also recorded a hat trick. Lauren Healy finished with four points as she had two goals and two assists while Ella Daniels and Ruby Sterling both scored twice. Grace Daniels and Julia McNeely both found the back of the Spartan net once.

Melrose goalie Izzy Costello made a season-high 15 saves in net to improve to 12-4.

In a non-league game on May 15, Melrose also edged host Methuen, 10-9, in overtime.

Frawley was the hero in this one, scoring a little over a minute into the overtime session to set off a wild celebration.

“It was a tough environment but the girls did a good job of staying focused,” said Geiter. “Our leaders showed a quiet confidence.”

The Rangers led this game 5-4 at the half as it was nip-and-tuck the entire day.

Mathews had four goals and one assist while Frawley and Arnold each scored three times. Ella Daniels had one assist

Costello had seven stops in this game.

Melrose will wrap up their regular season on Wednesday (post deadline) against Watertown before awaiting their Div. 2 playoff bracket. Stay tuned.
