Track & wrestlers shine in extended season

BOSTON—Several Melrose High athletes have enjoyed extended post season efforts in their respective sports, as they competed in state wide and New England competition. 

Wrestling

State Champ Johnny Moraes is advancing to the New England Finals after securing a second place finish All Sates at Methuen High on Sunday, March 2. That finish guarantees him a spot at this weekend’s New England finals at Providence Career and Technical Academy.

Senior captain Marco Albanese advanced to a second day and finished sixth in the 157 weight class.

It’s been a great season for Owen Savage, who finished his sophomore year in a fantastic fashion by competing in day one action at All States. Savage had previously placed second in the Div. 2 North Sectionals, and fourth at Div. 2 states in the 106.

Boys Indoor Track 

It was a fine finish for the qualified athletes of the league champ MHS boy’s indoor track team who advanced three athletes to the exclusive New England Indoor Track Championship held at the Reggie Lewis Center over last weekend.
State champion Sam Madden cracked the top ten with a 9th place finish in the high jump. State silver medalist Caleb Barnes placed 14th in the 2 mile. And Adam Caldwell was 19th in the 600 meter.

These athletes are expected to continue their track efforts in the spring season.

Girls’ indoor Track 

Congrats are in order to the Melrose High girls indoor track 4×800 relay team of Reilly Powell, Cadence L’Heureux, Maizie Frakt and Ella Yorkey who placed an impressive 11 among a massive field at the New England Indoor Track Championship held last weekend. Their time was the 93rd best in the nation.
