MELROSE — David Carbonneau, a dedicated Physics and Business teacher at Melrose High School since 2007 is battling glioblastoma, an aggressive and malignant brain tumor. In response, the Melrose community is coming together to show their support with a fundraiser on Thursday, January 23 at the Knights of Columbus located at 23 West Foster St. from 6 to 9:30 p.m.
David’s journey began this past June when he experienced mild seizures on the last day of school. Following hospitalization, he underwent two brain surgeries for a lesion that was ultimately diagnosed as glioblastoma. Over the summer, David underwent six weeks of daily chemotherapy and radiation treatments to treat the tumor which could not be fully removed. While these treatments have helped stabilize the condition, glioblastoma is known for its high recurrence rate.
After extensive research, David’s wife Kris discovered a promising vaccine administered by a treatment center in Germany. This cutting-edge treatment uses a patient’s DNA to stimulate an immune response to the cancer. The vaccine, developed by CeGaT has shown significant success in treating glioblastoma patients particularly those with a strong antigen-peptide match such as David. Unfortunately, the vaccine is not yet available in the U.S. though Dana Farber Cancer Institute is conducting clinical trials for which David was not eligible.
The individualized nature of the vaccine development elevates the cost to study and manufacture it to $95,000 and this does not include the expenses associated with the trips to Germany to administer the treatment. None of these costs are covered by insurance.
To support David and his family, a group of friends has organized the January 23 fundraiser. The event will feature bingo, raffles, food and a cash bar. It’s a chance for the community to come together to celebrate and support a beloved teacher who has impacted so many lives. Donations of any amount will be accepted, and everyone is encouraged to attend.
For those unable to make the event, there are still opportunities to show support. Community members can leave messages of encouragement or share fond memories by signing a community card of well-wishes at tinyurl.com/Community-Card. Donations can also be made through a GoFundMe page facilitated by the First Congregational Church of Melrose at tinyurl.com/Dave-Carbonneau.
Additionally, the Reach Leadership Club at Melrose High School is organizing a student-run benefit concert later this year. The club, part of the national nonprofit Family Reach works to provide financial support to families facing the burdens of cancer.
David and Kris have been deeply moved by the outpouring of love and generosity from students, neighbors, co-workers, family and friends. “We are overwhelmed by the support and are so grateful to everyone dedicating their time and energy to making us feel so loved,” they shared.
Let’s come together as a community to support David in his fight and show him just how much he means to all of us.
