READING — Youth wrestlers from the Red Roots Wrestling Club (RRWC) earned the Middle School team state championship at the Massachusetts Wrestling Association Youth State Championship tournament held in Reading last weekend.
RRWC is the local youth wrestling program for North Reading and other surrounding towns including Reading, Wakefield, Lynnfield, and Wilmington. The team is coached by North Reading resident Jason Emery.
The squad scored 122.5 points, outpacing second place Riptide Wrestling (Hanover) and 3rd place Billerica. Overall, 58 towns/clubs participated in the tournament. RRWC led the field with seven place winners who each earned a ticket to participate in the New England Youth Championships in March in Hanover.
Place winners for Red Roots included Jaden Fullerton (1st), Dominic DiCenso (3rd), Henry Santini (3rd), Zach Lim (4th), Aydin Lamb (4th), Trevor Blomquist (4th) and Zach Emery (5th). Each wrestler had to wrestle up to seven matches and outpace up to 30 competitors to achieve a spot on the podium.
This year marked the most successful season in RRWC history. In addition to the state championship title, the team went undefeated in their dual meet season and won their league championship. For more information about local youth wrestling and the RRWC, please go to redrootswrestlingclub.org.
