NORTH READING — Prepare now for the annual North Reading 5K Turkey Trot Road Race, which will take place on Thursday, November 27, at 8 a.m.

Now in its 16th year, this event features both a 5K race and a 1.75-mile walk—and regularly welcomes 1,500 participants each Thanksgiving morning. Registration is currently available at www.northreadingturkeytrot.com.

Both courses—the 5K run and 1.75-mile walk—will follow last year’s routes, starting and finishing within Ipswich River Park. Detailed maps are accessible on the race website. Participants may select between the 5K run and the 1.75-mile walk.

The Turkey Trot offers a dynamic beginning to the holiday, suitable for seasoned runners pursuing personal records as well as individuals who wish to enjoy the autumn atmosphere with family and friends. Festive attire is encouraged; many participants wear themed hats and costumes, creating a lively atmosphere at the starting line. Volunteers support attendees along the course, enhancing the overall experience.

This event emphasizes community engagement, tradition, and philanthropy alongside the athletic component. It provides an inclusive environment for first-time walkers and experienced racers alike.

“The North Reading Hornet Hall of Fame continues to host the race before the annual high school football game, and we hope for favorable weather. This has become a cherished family tradition, so much so that registration has filled to the 1,500-participant limit ahead of race day over the past five years,” states Kirsten MacLellan, co-director with Joe Davis. The football game against Lynnfield is to be played at Lynnfield High School this year.

Funds support scholarships, equipment and supplies

Event proceeds benefit the Frederick A. Keyes scholarships—awarding $750 each to two graduating NRHS student-athletes actively involved in running programs—as well as equipment and supplies beyond regular school funding. To date, the Hall of Fame has contributed over $150,000 to the school from prior Turkey Trot events, supporting projects such as fitness center upgrades and partial funding for new scoreboards at various athletic fields, among other projects and needs. The Elementary School Challenge continues to provide opportunities for schools to earn funds for physical education, requiring 20 percent student body participation on race day; all schools met this target in the past two years.

Registration fees are $20 for students (ages 21 and under) and $30 for adults (ages 22+) now through Nov. 9 and increase by $10 per person as of Nov. 10. Special family rates are also available at $80 for family of four and $100 for a family of 5-6. Family rates rise to $90 and $115, respectively, starting Nov. 10.

Organizations committing to supporting the 2025 event to date are: Reading Gymnastics Academy, Denaro Chiropractic, Forever Young Wellness, Lady Di’s, Hornet’s Nest, Colonial Cleaners, North Reading Youth Volleyball Academy, Jason Elliott Septic Pumping, Torra Law, Por Shun, Rte. 28 Gas, Kitty’s Restaurant, Heav’nly Donuts, Aesthetic Dentistry, True North Realty, North Reading Diamond Club, Marathon Sports and Sourcepro. Sponsors receive recognition at the race and on 1,600 shirts distributed throughout the Greater Boston area. For sponsorship inquiries contact nrturkeytrot@gmail.com.
