MELROSE — Shirley Samson, 85, died peacefully on January 14. Shirley was the daughter of the late Charles and Laura Samson of Derby Rd. and a lifelong resident of Melrose. She leaves her sister Sr. Mary Samson of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, Rosemont, PA.
Shirley attended St. Mary’s School for twelve years, graduating in 1957. She also graduated from Salem State University. She worked at Melrose City Hall for many years and was the head of the Retirement Department. She also ran a food pantry at the Faith Evangelical Church where she was instrumental in helping many people.
Shirley was active in St. Mary’s Parish where she served many funeral masses. She was also an Associate of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus. Shirley enjoyed travel and golf. She is remembered by her many friends as a kind and generous person who will be greatly missed.
A Mass of Christian burial was held at 11 am. on Wednesday, January 22 at St. Mary’s Church, 4 Herbert St., Melrose. Visitation was held inside the church from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the mass. Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to attend. Interment was held at Wyoming Cemetery, 205 Sylvan St., Melrose on Friday, January 24 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions were made to St. Mary’s School, 4 Myrtle St., Melrose, MA 02176.
