Soccer Night success for MHS girls soccer
Melrose holds opponents scoreless in two games

MELROSE—Fred Green Field was the place to be last Friday evening as the sixth annual Melrose Soccer Night was underway, which saw both the Melrose High boys and girls’ varsity teams play back-to-back against Wilmington High. On the girls’ side, Melrose ended with a scoreless 0-0 tie. Coupled with a 2-0 win over Peabody days later, Melrose is now unbeaten two games straight, improving to 4-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the Freedom Division.
“We had the slight territorial advantage,” said Melrose head coach Olivia Downey of their effort against Wilmington. “Kate [Stratford] did a good job in net.”
Stratford made four stops against the Wildcats, who are the defending Middlesex League Freedom Division champs.
Melrose had 11 overall shots with eight on net while Wilmington had nine shots with four on goal.
Melrose also welcomed back defenseman Kate Leeman who missed the previous two games due to an injury.
“She did good job out there,” said Downey about Leeman.
Downey was also happy to see a big crowd come out for their biggest attendance of the season.
On Sunday evening, the team beat guest Peabody, 2-0, in a non-league game. Both Melrose goals were scored in the second half. In the 21st minute of the second stanza, Melrose’s Lauren Healy scored assisted by Ella Yorkey. Yorkey then assisted on Sophie McElligott’s goal in the 37th minute.
“We named Ella the Player of the Game,” pointed out Melrose head coach Olivia Downey. “She was in the right place at the right time for both goals.”
Kate Stratford was the goalkeeper in this game and she made three saves, recording her second-straight shutout.
On Sept. 27, Melrose will travel to to Victory Field to take on host Watertown at 4:00 p.m. Melrose then host Lexington at Fred Green Field on Sept. 29 at 6:30 p.m.
