LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield High softball team doubled up visiting Essex Tech, 4-2, on Monday afternoon. With that win, the Pioneers improved to 7-8 overall and 5-6 in the Cape Ann League.
Pioneer pitcher, Sophia Brown, went all seven innings allowing two runs, six hits, five walks and she struck out two as her record improved to 6-7
“She was dynamite with runners on base,” pointed out Pioneers head coach Hector Longo. “She left 10 runners stranded.”
Lynnfield scored two runs in the fifth inning and two more in the bottom of the sixth. The Hawks, meanwhile, scored their two runs in the top of the sixth.
In the fifth inning, Morgan Hubbard delivered an RBI single while Olivia Kelter walked with the bases loaded.
Ava Gamache had a two-run single to left-center in the sixth inning as the Pioneers finished with five total hits.
Lynnfield honored their three seniors, captains Brown, Gamache and Catie Kampersal, before the game.
“This was a good win for us,” said Longo.
It was a nice bounce-back win after losing last Friday to visiting Lowell Catholic, 7-2, in a non-league game.
“They beat us twice this year,” pointed out Longo, as the Crusaders won the first meeting, 7-5, back on April 19. “They have a good pitcher.”
Lowell Catholic scored three times in the fourth inning, twice in the fifth and twice more in the top of the seventh.
Lynnfield had single runs in the third and seventh innings.
Pitcher Gia Gagnon fell to 1-1 in the circle as she went five innings. She gave up three earned runs, nine hits, one walk and she struck out three.
The Pioneer offense had six hits but they had no multiple hitters. Lily Williams had an RBI double in the seventh while Gamache had an RBI on a ground out that allowed Gagnon, who tripled, to score in the third.
On May 9, the Pioneers belted Manchester-Essex 13-1. This game was moved to Lynnfield as the Hornets were actually the home team and batted last.
Brown pitched all seven innings allowing one run, four hits, two walks and she fanned seven.
The Pioneer offense erupted for 12 hits.
“We hit the ball pretty well that day,” said Longo.
Hubbard led the way going 2 for 3 with an RBI and two walks. Gamache was 2 for 4 with one RBI while Kelter and Kaila George were both 2 for 5. Kelter knocked in two runs while George knocked in one as Lynnfield had four multiple hitters.
On May 15, the Pioneers visit North Reading trying to get a split of the season series. The Pioneers then visit Rockport on May 17.
On May 20, the Pioneers host Amesbury.
All three games will start at 4 p.m. Lynnfield entered this week seeded 16th in the MIAA Division 4 power rankings. The top 32 schools, at the end of the regular season, automatically qualify for the state tournament.
