Some ‘good news’ generated by MPS

MELROSE — The following has been taken from the 5th edition of the School Department’s Good News Fridays, a compilation of the great things happening in Melrose’s public schools this year.

This is a review from the week of October 2 to October 6.

Franklin Early Childhood Center

Our Franklin faculty and staff are constantly working to increase their knowledge base and skill in their efforts to support the very diverse language learning needs of ALL our students. A child’s ability to ask and answer questions, listen to and respond to teachers and friends, and express their wants and needs are just a few of the skills we all work to support at Franklin. How these skills develop and or are accessed by each of our students is as varied as our students.

As lifelong learners our faculty and staff use their common planning time each day as well as time during their early release days and full day professional development days to work collaboratively as they constantly hone their extraordinary ability to support language needs of ALL Franklin students.

In addition to our dedicated teachers and paraprofessionals, one of our greatest resources at Franklin are our phenomenal speech and language pathologists. Michelle Theodore, Eliza Stopa, Jenna Pickard and Katie Jablon. This dynamic team of speech and language experts not only provide special education services to identified students, they also share their vast knowledge of language acquisition with our classroom teachers and paraprofessionals.

Horace Mann School

The Horace Mann PTO put on a fantastic movie night on Sunday. It was a perfect evening to gather under stars as a community. What a fun way to enjoy our kids just being kids!

Hoover School

Second graders at the Hoover School are learning all about different types of communities in both ELA and in Social Studies. They were able to see their neighborhood on Google Earth and then drew a map of where they live.

Lincoln School

Some of our Kindergarten students have paired up with our 5th graders to be reading buddies! This past week was their first meeting and each room was abuzz with excitement as our youngest and oldest students paired up for the first time to share their favorite books!

Roosevelt School:

The 3rd grade students at Roosevelt are learning about communities in Social Studies. The learned how each of us impact and interact with communities. They took some time to interview our Assistant Principal, Vena Cruz. She is a leader in our school community. They asked her questions such as: How, as an AP, do you contribute to the Roosevelt community? How can our students contribute to our community? They asked her about other communities she is a member of, why and how she contributes in a positive way to those communities outside of school. They learned so much about her and how we are all members of so many communities, large and small. They learned how their actions impact those communities. This also connects to the E in RAVEN.

We Value Everyone, each member of our community for who they are, same or different.

Winthrop School

Third graders have been building their routines and enjoying SEL team building activities. “How can we build a learning community?” and “The Power of Yet”.

Third graders also started the month of October with some goal setting! This month our goals are centered around iReady reading and math.

Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School

This week during PRIME time MVMMS students participated in some Hispanic Heritage Month activities. Students explored the lives of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society.

8th grade Civics students were learning their opinions and thoughts, even though they are not able to vote. They created their own displays of what matters to them. #Tooyoungtovote

Melrose High School

Your school, Melrose High School, has earned a place on the AP School Honor Roll for the 2022-23 school year! On behalf of everyone in the AP community, congratulations to you and your colleagues.

Our Italian visitors and their Melrose peers have been having an amazing and rewarding experience creating long lasting relationships. Their host families have made them feel home, safe and cared for. This opportunity has helped narrowing differences and streighting similarities between both communities and has supported mutual learning and understanding between people of different backgrounds.
