WAKEFIELD — The spring sports season officially begins with tryouts today at Wakefield Memorial High School.
A rainy start is somewhat fitting for a season that typically involves multiple weather postponements during April.
Practices and tryouts for spring sports will occur this week and next week before the regular season begins the week of April 1.
The nine spring sports are baseball, softball, girls’ track, boys’ track, girls’ lacrosse, boys’ lacrosse, girls’ tennis, boys’ tennis and boys’ volleyball.
The boys’ track team is looking to defend last year’s Div. 4 state championship. The Warriors, who went 4-1 in league play, will return All-Stars JaMauri Belmer, Isaac Melo, Ethan Mezikofsky, Andrew Nett and Ryan Hogan.
The girls’ track team went 5-0 in the regular season to win the Middlesex League Freedom Division title. They will return All-Stars Lily Sallee, Grace Brackett, Abby Hartigan, Quin Wilcox, Liza Bangston and Sophia Anderson.
The baseball team went 16-4 in the regular season and 13-3 in the league to win the Freedom Division title. They will return All-Stars Marc Gagne and Jayvith Chea.
The softball team tied for a Freedom Division title last year with a 9-5 league record. They will return all four of their All-Stars from that team: Jade Waterhouse, Kathryn Sliski, Jackie Sullivan and Molly Burns.

The boys’ tennis team took 2nd in the Freedom Division with a 10-6 league record. They will try for first this year with a strong returning team including league MVP Luke Greif and fellow All-Stars Trevor Veilleux and Kevin DeGray.
The girls’ tennis team won five league matches and also made the state tournament. They will return All-Stars Toni Whitson and Addie Moon.
The boys’ lacrosse team also made the tournament with a 7-10 record. They will bring back All-Stars Seamus Cable and JP Casey.
The girls’ lacrosse made the tournament with a record of 8-10. They will have to replace all three of their All-Stars from that team.
The boys’ volleyball team will begin their third season this spring.
