Throwback Thursday: Snow from 1948

FOR TODAY’S throwback photo, we return once again to 1948, one of the snowiest winters on record in the Boston area. Nearly 90 inches of the white stuff fell that winter. When this photo was taken in January, plowed snow piles reached over halfway up the Main Street/Salem Street signpost. The mostly-covered “Not over 30,” sign on Main Street referred to the speed limit, not to the depth of the snow.
