NORTH READING — North Reading High School Principal Dr. Miriam Meyer has announced that Kevin Gu and Quin Kelly were named Commended Students in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Letters of Commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, were presented to these scholastically talented seniors.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2026 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2026 competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Kelly aspires to attend the Coast Guard Academy where she would like to study environmental science. In addition to her studies at NRHS, she is currently a student intern with the Andover Conservation Commission. Gu plans to pursue a degree in computer programming. He is currently undecided on his top choices for college. In his spare time he enjoys video games and is also a member of the band.

According to NMSC, Commended Students demonstrate outstanding potential for academic success and they represent a valuable national resource. Recognizing their accomplishments as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in the nation. It is hoped this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities as they continue their pursuit of academic success.
