Boys’ tennis team finishes regular season strong

By STEPHEN MARTELLUCCI

NORTH READING — On May 23, the seedings came out for the MIAA Division 3 state boys’ tennis tournament. North Reading was seeded 11th as they got to open the postseason at home.

The Hornets finished 13-5 overall this spring. In the Cape Ann League, they were 8-5 as they came in third place in the CAL Kinney division behind Newburyport and Lynnfield.

“It was a successful regular season,” said Hornets head coach Mark Bisognano. “We really would have liked to finish in the top eight so we could have gotten a second-round home match, but overall we did well.”

The Hornets wrapped up the regular season on May 20 as it was their eighth match in a nine-day span due to weather issues and make-ups.

Bisognano gave his squad a couple of days off late last week to recover and his team is healthy entering the tournament.

On Wednesday, the Hornets hosted Dighton-Rehoboth in a first round match (result not available as of press time).

Dighton-Rehoboth, who is the 22nd-seed, entered that match at 6-6.

If the Hornets won that match, they will play the winner of the Weston vs. Pentucket match sometime early next week.

Weston is the sixth-seed while Pentucket is the 27th-seed.

North Reading was 2-0 against Pentucket this year and did not face Weston, a powerhouse program out of the Dual County League.
