Girls’ lacrosse wins big on Senior Night

NORTH READING — In their regular-season finale on May 21, the North Reading High girls’ lacrosse team clobbered Georgetown, 17-4, at home on Senior Night.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 10-8 overall and 5-8 in the Cape Ann League. The Royals fell to 1-17 overall and 0-13 in the CAL.

Addie Hajj and Eva Cannalonga both led the offense with four goals each. Alaina Driscoll and Makenzie Murphy each recorded hat tricks.

Mikaela O’Driscoll had one goal and two assists while Madison Hopfer and Ella Donovan each scored once. For Donovan, it was her first-career goal.

Jill Ball and Lindsey Rosenthal each added one assist.

Hornet goalie, Cara Ward, made seven saves.

“First off, I want to thank and congratulate our six seniors for everything they’ve given to our lacrosse program: Ball, Hopfer, Rosenthal and Alexa Pepper and managers Ava Levine and Grace Higgins,” said Hornets head coach Matt Costello. “It was our Senior Night, last home game and last Cape Ann League game, so there was a lot to celebrate and play for. Georgetown has a number of players with high lacrosse IQ’s, and they were giving us defensive fits early, but scoring three goals in the last minute of the second quarter to make it a 13-3 halftime advantage provided enough of a cushion to sustain the lead throughout the rest of the second half.”

The Hornets scrimmaged at Peabody on Tuesday afternoon to gear up for states.

Entering this week, the Hornets were ranked 16th in the MIAA Division 4 power rankings.

The lacrosse brackets came out on Wednesday afternoon (opponent, date and time unknown as of press time). If the

Hornets can stay in the top 16, they will host a first round game.
