LYNNFIELD — The LHS volleyball team won their eighth match in a row with a 3-0 sweep over rival North Reading on Monday.
The victory was sweet revenge for the Pioneers who fell to the Hornets 3-2 in the first meeting on Sept. 26. That match was the last loss for the Pioneers as of press time.
Lynnfield (16-2) made quick work of North Reading (14-2) after a close first set that ended 25-22. The Pioneers cruised from there, winning the second set, 25-10 and the third, 25-18.
That win came on the heels of a 3-0 road win against Hamilton-Wenham on October. 16. Lynnfield won in straight set scores of 15-19, 25-12 and 25-23.
Audrey Manning led the attack against the Generals with 18 kills. She also added 2 aces, 8 digs and 15 assists.
Alexia Vaquerano had 11 kills, 14 digs and 13 receptions.
Elliana Moretti led the way with 4 serving aces and 16 digs. Thayer Sutherland and Sophie Shaievitz also had 2 aces.
Carina DeLeo had a team-high 18 assists. Olivia Kelter had a team-high 20 receptions.
Lynnfield’s 14th win of the campaign was a hard-fought, 3-2 decision over the Clippers in Newburyport.
The two teams alternated set wins with Lynnfield taking the first, 25-17 before the Clippers returned the favor with an identical 25-17 in the second. Lynnfield bounced back to win the third 25-23 but Newburyport took the fourth, 25-17. The Pioneers closed the win with a 15-10 decision in the fifth.
Moretti (39 serve receptions, 26 digs) and Kelter (31 receptions, 16 digs) led a gritty effort on the back line while Manning and Vaquerano each had 15 kills.
Milana Labkovich had 5 kills and 2 blocks. Manning added 4 aces and 17 assists while DeLeo had 18 helpers.
The Pioneers, ranked No. 4 in the latest Div. 3 power rankings, have two matches remaining: on Wednesday, 5 p.m. against Georgetown at home and on Friday, 5:15 p.m. at Triton.
