Council race takes shape

WAKEFIELD — The race apparently is on for an open seat on the Town Council.

Yesterday, Fox Road’s Gerard Leeman took out nomination papers for the position vacated when Ed Dombroski was elected Town Treasurer on April 22. Samuel Hockenbury of Emerson Street took out nomination papers Tuesday.

The Town Council voted Monday to hold a June 24 special election to fill the vacancy.

Nomination papers are now available at the Town Clerk’s Office in Town Hall for anyone interested in running for the vacant Town Council post.

At the annual Town Election held last month, Dombroski was the victor in a four-way contest for Town Treasurer, a position held for over two decades by John J. McCarthy Jr., who decided to retire and to not seek reelection. Dombroski defeated Michael McLane, Andrew McCarthy and Peter McManama in the race to succeed John McCarthy.

Editorial Note: “An Election Reminder”

On Monday, the Town Council approved a June 24 special election to fill a vacant seat on the board. As preparations of campaigns get underway, we want to offer all current and future candidates the chance to tell voters about themselves.

Office hopefuls may submit one biographical piece about themselves, along with a photograph and their reasons for seeking elective office, which we call a candidate’s statement. It can be of any length the candidate deems necessary. However, if we feel it’s too long, we will edit it for space.

All candidates may also submit three letters to our Forum section if they want to speak out further about their position on various issues facing the town.

Supporters of candidates may also submit Forum letters. We have no limit on the number of letters submitted in support of candidates.

All letters and candidate statements can be submitted to the Daily Item either by email at news@wakefielditem.com or U.S. Mail (26 Albion St., Wakefield, MA 01880). Electronic Word documents are preferred to prevent the need to retype your work and to minimize the chance of error.

To ensure that we treat everyone fairly, we must have deadlines for submissions. We need to have all candidate statements no later than Wednesday, June 18. All Forum letters in support of candidates or those written by the candidates themselves must be submitted to us by the same time. We will not print any election-related letters or candidate statements after Friday, June 20.

And as a side note, the newspaper plays by an entirely different set of rules than much of social media does. The discourse in everything submitted to us needs to be civil and respectful. Vitriol and rhetoric can be spewed someplace else.

Finally, good luck to all the candidates who are willing to volunteer their time to serve our community.
