WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield High boys’ lacrosse team improved to 11-2 with victories over Lexington and Danvers last week.
The Warriors took down Lexington 13-6 on May 8 at Landrigan Field for a quality, Middlesex League victory.
“It was a big win for us,” said Wakefield head coach Andy Wells. “Lexington is always well-coached and have been a power in the league for a while. It was great to see the team respond well after losing to Reading and Winchester.”
Multiple players stood out under the lights for the Warriors. Leading the attack was sophomore John Scarpello (6 goals, 2 assists), junior Brady Walsh (4 goals) and sophomore Nick Metsis (2 goals).
Defensive midfielder, junior Cam Sartori, earned player of the game honors from the Wakefield coaching staff for his hustle on both sides of the ball.
The Warriors kept that momentum going into their matchup with the Falcons on Saturday morning at Landrigan. They took a 5-0 lead after one quarter and held an 11-2 advantage at halftime.
Junior Seamus Cable had 2 goals and 5 assists; Nick Metsis had 3 goals and 3 assists; Walsh had 4 goals and an assist — reaching his 200th career point in the process. Scarpello, seniors Ryan Metsis and Dan McHugh and junior Brady Zdanowicz all had a goal and an assist.
“It was another positive win,” said Wells. “It was a rainy day but the team just stayed focused and took control from the jump.”
Scarpello took a feed from Zdanowicz on the opening face-off to get the Warriors off and running.
The defense was also plenty dominant in this game led by defensemen, senior Tommy DeFeo, junior JP Casey and sophomore Jake Skowron along with defensive middies like Sartori, McHugh and Ryan Metsis.
Metsis picked off a pass and started a rush which led to Wakefield’s second goal. He moved it up to Cable who drew in a defender and found Walsh for an open shot to make it 2-0.
Zdanowicz was terrific from the face-off X, helping the Warriors keep control and maintain possession.
Junior Gabe Guida got on the board after a dish from Nick Metsis to make it 3-0.
Senior goalie Zach Courtright made a couple of nice saves to keep the lead at three before Wakefield built on it. A long clearing pass from Casey to Ryan Metsis led to a rush that ended with another goal in front by Walsh. The final goal of the opening quarter was scored by Nick Metsis on a missile from up top after a curl around a screen.
The Warriors kept this pace in the 2nd quarter to extend the lead and focused on possession in the second half until they were able to give their starters a rest in the 4th.
“It was good for us to get a lot of our younger guys into the game,” said Wells. “We haven’t had the chance to do that much this year so it was a great learning experience for them.”
That included sophomore John Taylor who had 2 goals as well as freshman Ethan Thomas who scored in the 4th.
Wakefield only had one game this week, another home contest, this time against Burlington. The Red Devils earned a hard-fought, 10-7 win.
The Warriors will bring an 11-3 record into the final week of the regular season. They travel to Watertown on Monday before returning home for their final two games against Wilmington on Wednesday and Manchester-Essex on Thursday.
Wakefield was ranked No. 8 in the latest Div. 3 power rankings which were released on Tuesday.
