WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield High boys’ tennis team’s busy week ended on Friday with a 3-2 victory over Melrose. The Warriors (6-5) completed the season sweep against their rivals as they also won 3-2 on April 11.

That was the fourth match in four straight days for the Warriors who fell to Belmont 3-2 on Tuesday and Lexington 5-0 on Wednesday before a big, 3-2 win over Reading on Thursday.

Another hectic week awaits the team as the schedule continues to morph around the poor weather this spring season. The Warriors host Stoneham today and Woburn tomorrow, both 4:15 p.m. at the Dobbins Courts. They travel to Burlington on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and host Watertown on Friday at 4:15 p.m.

The win over Reading on the road Thursday was a good one for Wakefield. The Rockets were ranked No. 32 in the latest Div. 2 power rankings at 5-5 while the Warriors were ranked No. 19 in Div. 3.

Wakefield’s singles players sealed the win going a perfect 3-0. Luke Greif cruised at first singles, 6-0, 6-0.

Trevor Veilleux won at second singles, 6-3, 6-1.

Kevin DeGray was victorious at third singles, 6-3, 6-1.

First doubles fell, 6-1, 6-2 and second doubles lost, 6-2, 6-0.

The Warriors kept it going against Melrose indoors at the Bass River Tennis Club in Beverly on Friday night.

The singles players once again came through as they swept all three matchups.

DeGray won 6-2, 6-0 at third singles and Greif battled for a 6-2, 6-4 victory at first singles.

Veilleux dropped the first set 6-3 at second singles but worked hard to get back into it, taking the second set, 6-3 before earning a hard-fought, 6-4 in the tie-breaking third set.

Wakefield’s doubles teams played well, but both came up short in three-set thrillers.

Owen Kelley and Ahmed Othman took the first set, 6-4 at first doubles before falling 6-4 and then 6-1 in the third.

Ankush Sharma and Gus Sanni dropped a tough first set, 7-6 at second doubles but forced a third set with a 6-4 win in set two before falling, 10-6 in a 10-point tiebreaker.

Wakefield’s four matches this week will bring them close to the finish line of the regular season. Their final two matches are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday next week.
