Avid sportsman, enjoyed the great outdoors and loved working with his hands
WAKEFIELD — Matthew J. Gelardi Jr. passed away on Thursday, October 16 at the age of 88. He was born in Winthrop to the late Matthew and Phyllis (Mercurio) Gelardi on July 8, 1937.
Even in his early years, Matthew always enjoyed spending his time adventuring in the great outdoors. He was happiest when working with his hands, whether it was auto mechanics, electrical, woodworking or projects around the house. In 1960, Matthew married Elaine D. Hofmann of Malden and the two spent 65 wonderful years building a life and family together.
Matthew was an avid sportsman which led him to build many lasting friendships. He was known for his animated storytelling and his quick-witted jokes. Matt was a hard worker who was always committed to his family.
Matthew is survived by his loving wife Elaine Gelardi of Wakefield; his son Robert Gelardi and his wife Pamela of East Wakefield, NH; and his daughter Deanna Sullivan and her husband Timothy of Wakefield. Matthew is also survived by his grandchildren Kyrsten, Christina, Nicholas and Kathryn; and his two great grandchildren Nora and Mitchel.
A graveside service will be held at Lakeside Cemetery, North Ave., Wakefield on Saturday, October 25 at 1 p.m. Services are in the care of the McDonald Funeral Home, Wakefield.
