Michael Elgart, 74

Enjoyed poker, music and playing softball

WAKEFIELD — Michael “Mike” S. Elgart, former longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully in Wakefield on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

Michael was born on July 3, 1950, in Boston to Ernest and Joyce (McFarland) Elgart. He grew up in Reading and Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School in 1968 and attended college at UMass, Amherst.

Mike played for many years for Curley’s in the Somerville Softball League with his many friends and family playing beside him. When he wasn’t playing poker or listening to music he worked at the local supermarket.

Mike loved his music and was a big Bob Dylan and Barry Manilow fan, but one of his favorite songs was a Don McLean tune called “Castles in the Sky.” 

He also enjoyed birthdays, Christmas, chopped liver, eggnog and Brigham’s vanilla bean ice cream along with being visited by his favorite “nurse” Julie who always brought him a “Whopper.”    

Mike eventually moved to Wakefield where he lived with his favorite cat named “Buddy.” He eventually moved to Vantage Healthcare, formerly Wakefield Center, where he was well taken care of for many years.

Mike is survived by his sisters Sandy Swain of Alton, NH, Lisa Wilder of Strafford, NH and his bothers Scott Elgart of Melrose, James Foley of Hopedale, MA and Matthew Foley of Everett. He was predeceased by his sister Catherine Kennedy of Byfield, MA. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements handled by Gately Funeral home with a Celebration of Life to be announced.
