WAKEFIELD — Beginning tonight, Jews around the world will mark Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar. Known as the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur is a day of reflection, prayer, and renewal. It is observed through fasting and heartfelt prayer, beginning with the moving Kol Nidrei service and concluding with the stirring Neilah, when the gates of heaven are said to be closing.
In Wakefield, Chabad of Wakefield is opening its doors to the community with welcoming services that are warm, explanatory, and open to all regardless of background or experience.
Services will be held at the Four Points by Sheraton in Wakefield. The observance begins with Kol Nidrei tonight, Wednesday, October 1, at 6:30 pm. Services continue on Yom Kippur Day, tomorrow, Thursday, October 2, with the morning service at 9:30 am.
Families are invited to participate together. A children’s and family program will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m., designed to bring the meaning of Yom Kippur alive for young participants through stories, songs, and activities. Parents may join their children in this program or remain in the main service.
The traditional Yizkor Memorial Service will take place tomorrow at 11:00 am, offering a special opportunity to honor and remember loved ones.
The solemn day will conclude with the powerful Neilah closing prayer followed by a communal break-fast tomorrow evening at 6:00 pm, bringing the community together in unity and celebration after the fast.
“Yom Kippur belongs to every Jew,” said Rabbi Sruly Brook, who together with his wife Devora directs Chabad of Wakefield. “Whether someone comes every year or is stepping into services for the first time, our goal is to provide a warm and uplifting environment where each person feels at home.”
There will be security throughout the services to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for all attendees.
There is no charge to attend, and all are welcome. RSVPs are appreciated for the children’s program to ensure proper accommodations.
