Wakefield’s Elwell helps lead playoff push for Melrose Americans

MELROSE — The Melrose Americans are entering their final week of the Intercity League’s regular season with a record of 15-10-1, just one point back of the Malden Maddogs and Lexington Bulldogs who are tied for second place. 

Matt Elwell, of Wakefield, is having another strong season for the Americans, his second after making his debut last summer. 

Elwell is 6th on the team with 13 hits this summer. He’s also 6th in runs scored with 10 and 3rd in stolen bases with 3. Elwell’s on-base percentage of .450 is 2nd on the team amongst those who have appeared in at least 15 games. His batting average is .283, also 2nd amongst those who have played at least 15. 

Elwell, a 2023 graduate of Wakefield High, concluded his sophomore season at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine this spring. 

The Americans play their home games at Morelli Field in Melrose. They have two regular season games remaining including the finale tomorrow night, 7:30 p.m. at Morelli. The playoffs will begin this weekend. To learn more visit the league’s website at:
