Throwback Thursday: 1940

IN THE DAYS before supermarkets like Stop & Shop, Market Basket, Shaw’s and Whole Foods, Wakefield residents purchased their food at small grocery stores like the Junction Market at 595 Main Street, shown in this 1940 photo. The store stood on the west side of Main Street in the Junction area, approximately opposite the current location of Dunkin’ Donuts. The first mention of the Junction Market in the Daily Item appeared in a 1903 advertisement. The store closed in 1953 after Herbert A. Thrush sold the building to local caterer John W. Sleet. Thrush had been associated with the Junction Market for 50 years, including 35 years as the owner. Prior to Thrush, the market was owned an operated by William “Doc” Block. Note that the billboard sign on the corner of the building advertises the 1940 movie musical, “Tin Pan Alley,” starring Betty Grable and Alice Faye, playing at the Wakefield Theatre.
