Throwback Thursday: Building a high school one century ago
February 6, 2025
WHAT A DIFFERENCE a century makes. Compare the technology currently being used to construct the new high school on Farm Street to this photo from 1921 showing the ground being prepared for the new Wakefield High School on the Main Street site of the old Cyrus Wakefield estate. A steam shovel was used to fill horse-drawn carts with dirt to level the knoll where the Wakefield mansion once stood, just south of the present Americal Civic Center. About 10 years earlier, the town had determined that the old high school building on the Lafayette Street (the current Town Hall) was no longer adequate. The new Wakefield High School opened on Main Street in 1923.
