THIS PHOTO is of Wakefield Square in 1930, looking north from the corner of Main and Water streets. In the foreground on the right, the ivy-covered edge of the old Town Hall is visible. Across Main Street is the W.T. Grant Co. department store, on the current site of the Farmland parking lot. Note that all of the vintage vehicles are parallel parked. The present angle-parking scheme was yet to come. Trolley tracks are still visible on Main Street. Off in the distance, the old First Baptist Church steeple stands tall. American flags are posted at intervals along the sidewalk, pointing to a more patriotic time. A banner strung across Main Street reads “Wakefield Welcomes Legionnaires.”
