Town in line for $1.3M MWRA loan

WAKEFIELD — Wakefield will be receiving an interest-free loan from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority in the amount of $1,356,000 for the replacement of water mains. The Town Council approved and signed the relevant documents and agreements this week.

The loan will fund the town’s Water Main Improvements Project, which includes replacing approximately 11,800 linear feet of existing 6 and 8-inch water main with 8 and 12-inch ductile iron water main. Work also includes the replacement of water services, fittings, gates, curb stops, fire hydrants and all appurtenances. The project will be constructed on Main Street (Salem to Lowell Street), Aborn Avenue, Court Street, Emerson Street, Gould Street and Wharton Park.

Town Treasurer Edward Dombroski Jr. appeared before the Town Council this week to present the financial agreements on behalf of the town.

The loan will be re-paid to the MWRA in 10 equal installments of $135,600 over a ten-year period, beginning one year from the date that the town receives the loan, Dombroski explained. The town will receive the funding on or about Nov. 20, 2025. The first repayment installment is scheduled for November 15, 2026.

Implementation of the water system improvement project must begin within ninety 90 days of execution of the relevant agreements. The town will be required to submit to the MWRA regular progress and financial reports throughout the term of the project.
