
URLINGTON — The Warrior boys’ track and field team accomplished one major goal for the season last week by defeating Burlington to finish the regular season undefeated and claim the Freedom Division title for the first time since 2018.
Both teams were undefeated going into the competition and Wakefield defeated Burlington with a score of 75-61.
At the same time, the Warriors were facing Watertown as part of a tri-meet and also defeated the Raiders, 118-17, officially finishing the regular season with a record of 5-0.
Brody Wyatt was incredible throughout the meet, capturing 1st in three events. Wyatt kicked off the meet by breaking his own school record in the 400 meter hurdles once again with a time of 57.25 for 1st place. He followed that up with a big win in the 110 hurdles in a personal best time of 15.66. Wyatt completed the triple win with a scorching victory in the 200 meters running the current number one time in Division 4: 22.36.
Also in the 400 meter hurdles, Evan Buonopane-Cohen placed 3rd in 60.54.
In the mile, Alec Buonopane-Cohen ran a personal best of 4:42.67 to place 2nd. Brandon Nett was 3rd in 4:46.17.
In the 100 meters, Jackson Conley placed 2nd in a time of 11.74. Adam Levy was 3rd in a personal best of 11.85.
Frankie Sullivan threw an outdoor best in the shot put to get the win with a 48’10.5”. Sullivan also placed 3rd in the discus with a personal best of 122’2”.
In the triple jump, JaMauri Belmer placed 1st with a jump of 44’1.75”.
Belmer also took 2nd in the long jump with a leap of 21’5.75”.
Aiden Jones was 3rd in the long jump with a personal best of 21’0.5”.
In the high jump, Belmer was 1st clearing 5’8”. Jake Mastroianni was 2nd with a personal best of 5’6”.
In the 400 meters, Isaac Melo got the win with a season best of 51.78. Edgard Meneguello was 2nd in a time of 52.65 in his first time running the event.
“The 400 meters is a perfect example of putting the team first,” said coach Ruben Reinoso. “Eddy had never run the 400 meters before but he stepped up for his team and ran a great time for big points.”
Ethan Mezikofsky had a strong win in the 800 meters running a personal best of 1:58.31. Aidan Burd had a personal best of 2:04.76 placing 3rd.
Carter Jefferson was 2nd in the javelin with a personal best of 152’1”. Sean Callanan was 3rd with a throw of 130’11”.
Jackson Conley was 3rd behind Wyatt in the 200 meters with a time of 23.17.
The Warriors got the sweep in the 2 mile with Andrew Nett placing 1st in a season best of 10:12.94. George Palmer was 2nd in 10:32.36 running the event for the first time. Devin DeBeradinis was 3rd in 11:05.07.
Four Warriors all had personal best jumps in the pole vault. Michael Mititchev reached 9’0”. Jimmy Preston, Michael Brown and Jack Ellis all jumped 7’0”.
In addition to the strong performances against Burlington there were many top finishes against Watertown.
Aidan Martin was 2nd in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 17.71. Martin was also 3rd in the 400 meter hurdles with a season best of 62.44. Sophomore Wyatt Timas was 3rd in the 100 meters with a personal best of 12.06.
Evan Buonopane-Cohen was 3rd in the 400 meters in a personal best of 55.27. Jacob Ciriello was 3rd in the 800 meters in a personal best of 2:06.31. Max Viselli was 3rd in the mile in 4:49.27.
The 4×100 meter relay team of Melo, Meneguello, Conley and Jones placed 1st against Watertown with a season best of 44.88. In the long jump, Mititchev had a personal best jump of 19’9.5 and was 3rd. In the triple jump, Carter Jefferson jumped 37’6.75 and was 3rd.
In the discus, Owen Brudnick had a huge personal best throw of 114 and was 3rd. This throw was about a 13 foot pr for Brudnick.
In the shot put, Jefferson had a personal best throw of 41’10.25 and was 2nd.
“I am so proud of our team because the last 7 years have ended the same way, coming up short against Burlington,” said Reinoso. “But this meet felt a little different from the start, the confidence that our kids had was different and it showed the way so many ran, threw and jumped personal bests.
“I read a quote recently that sums up the hard work this team has put in: ‘The bright lights don’t just shine on what you are doing in that moment but on the endless hard work that you have been doing when no one is watching.’”
The Warriors began their postseason on Saturday by winning the MSTCA Div. 4 State Relay championship for the 2nd consecutive season. A full story will appear later this week.
