LEXINGTON — The Wakefield High girls’ outdoor track and field team had a strong start to the season on Wednesday at Lexington High School, defeating Stoneham 105-31.

Kyler Dennison started off the Warrior scoring, winning the 100 hurdles and taking 2nd in the 100 meter run.

Megan Clark won the triple jump and took 2nd in the 100 hurdles. Isabella Fusco completed the sweep in the 100 hurdles and took 3rd in the 400 hurdles. Stella DeAngelis closed out the 400 meter hurdles taking 3rd place.

Abby Hartigan had a fantastic day winning the 100, 200 and anchoring the winning 4×100 team.

“Abby works really hard and I am really happy it paid off for her,” said head coach Karen Barrett.

Freshman Guerly Joseph was also on the winning 4×100 team. She went on to win the high jump and placed 3rd in the 100.

“I was very impressed with her today,” said Barrett.

Brendia Diaz was the top point scorer for the day with 11 points.  She placed 1st in the shot put and javelin and 3rd in the discus.

“She had a really incredible day,” said Barrett.

Freshman Talia Galante also had a fantastic day with a huge PR in the long jump leaping 16’3.50″ winning the event. The jump was a foot longer than her best jump in indoor track this season. She also placed 2nd in the 200 and was on the 4×100 team.

Shane Revah closed out the 200 sweep placing 3rd and was also on the 4×100 relay.

Quin Wilcox ran a fantastic 800 meter placing 1st and ran the strongest leg on the winning 4×400 relay.

“She switched over from sprinting to distance this season and is absolutely crushing it,” said Barrett.

Freshman Laurel Renzi placed 3rd in the 800.

Freshman Ella Ferrell had a great day winning the mile and placing 3rd in the 400.

“She ran a really gutsy race in the 400. I love how she competes,” said Barrett.

Lily Sallee and Liza Bangston ran well in the 400, taking 1st and 2nd. They were both on the winning 4×400 team.

Freshman Hannah Caplin was also on the winning 4×400 team and took 3rd in the mile.

Grace Brackett and Yongyi Zhao took 1st and 2nd in the 2 mile.  Zhao ran a PR.

In the end, multiple Warriors put up scores that were the best in the opening week across the Middlesex League. Wilcox’s 800 is currently the best in the entire league. Ferrell (1 mile), Hartigan (100 and 200), Salle (400), Brackett (2 mile) and Joseph (high jump) all have the best scores in each of the mentioned events in the Freedom Division.

Wakefield will now prepare to take on a very tough Melrose team on Wednesday. The meet will take place at Woburn High at 4 p.m.

“We are all working hard and looking forward to competing,” said Barrett.
