BOSTON — Four Wakefield swimmers – senior captain Hudson Little, Marc Gagne, James Cook, and Malcolm Kelton – competed in the Division 2 State Championship meet held at the Boston University pool complex on Saturday, Feb. 22.

The championship meet was supposed to take place the Sunday before but was postponed due to weather. Unfortunately, the team’s success was impacted as a result because there were limited practice times available during the week in between, and senior captain Henry Brown was unavailable for the rescheduled date. The swimmers gave it their all, however, and gained some points toward the team total.

The medley relay team members – James Cook, Malcolm Kelton, Nick DeGennaro and Marc Gagne – earned the highest placement for the day, coming in 14th out of 23 teams. The top 16 finishers end up earning points, so Wakefield/Lynnfield started out on a positive note.

James Cook just missed scoring points after finishing 17th out of 28 in the 200-yard freestyle. He did score the other points for the team when he took 15th place out of 28 in the 100-yard backstroke.

In other individual races, Malcolm Kelton finished 23rd in the 50-yard freestyle and 25th in the 100-yard freestyle out of a large number of competitors, while Nick DeGennaro finished 21st in the 100-yard butterfly.

The 200-yard freestyle relay competitors – Malcolm Kelton, Marc Gagne, Brendan Koleszar, and Hudson Little – finished 17th. The 400-yard freestyle relay swimmers – Marc Gagne, Nick DeGennaro, Brendan Koleszar and Hudson Little – finished 22nd.

The team had another highly successful season overall, going undefeated in the regular season and missing out on the Cape Ann League Championship title by just 4 points.

The Warriors/Pioneers will return most of their swimmers next year, so will look forward to the same kind of success.
