Wakefield state tournament update

WAKEFIELD — Three Wakefield High teams will be competing in the state tournament this week. 

The 8th-ranked volleyball team defeated No. 25 Marshfield 3-1 in a first round matchup at the Charbonneau Field House on Saturday. The Warriors will now host No. 9 Canton in the Sweet 16 on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. Canton defeated No. 24 Masconomet 3-0 in the first round. 

The boys’ soccer team earned the No. 35 seed in the Div. 2 state tournament with an 8-5-4 record. The Warriors will meet a familiar foe in the preliminary round as they travel to No. 30 Reading (8-5-3) tonight at 5 p.m. The Rockets and Warriors met once in the regular season on Oct. 8 with Reading taking a close game, 2-1. The winner of tonight’s prelim will advance to the first round and travel to No. 3 Longmeadow (12-1-6) later this week.

The football team (3-5) earned a spot in the Div. 4 tournament with the No. 14 seed. Wakefield will travel to No. 3 Canton (6-2) this Friday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The winner will play the winner of No. 6 Marblehead vs. No. 11 Shepherd Hill in the quarterfinals.
