WAKEFIELD — If you’re a musician looking for an opportunity to play in an informal group that presents concerts for the Wakefield Community, then the Wakefield Summer Band is for you! WSB presents four Friday night concerts at the Common bandstand each summer with a wide-ranging repertoire from marches to show tunes to patriotic numbers to classical repertoire to oldies to “novelty” pieces and more Membership is open to all ages from high school and up; no upper age limit without audition and there are no dues. Rehearsals start on June 2 and will be held at the Wakefield Lynnfield Methodist Church Vernon St. on Mondays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. The season ends early in August. The WSB is very grateful to WLMC for providing the rehearsal space at no charge.
“The Wakefield Summer Band is a great opportunity for anyone who hasn’t picked up their instrument since high school or college,” says Don Hodgkins, the Founder/Director of WSB. “It’s a very informal, low-stress way to get back to playing your instrument and also serves to provide summer evening entertainment for anyone who’d like to come down to the lake to cool off and listen to some familiar music. The band’s repertoire is all very recognizable and covers all genres from the Baroque era to 60’s and 70’s rock & roll. Every program includes a march or two, a Broadway/TV/movie score, a patriotic number and several other types of familiar tunes. We recognize that, being summer, people will be going on vacation, so attendance for the whole season isn’t a requirement for membership.”
The WSB “Fridays at the Bandstand” Concert Series starts on June 27 and then continues every other Friday into early August. Please contact Don at donhodg@aol.com or 781-724-3297 for any further information. He’d love to hear from you but you can also just come and join us on any Monday in June.
