WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield High volleyball team kicked off their 2025 season with an impressive 3-0 victory over Tewksbury last night at the Charbonneau Field House.
The Warriors took two back-and-forth sets by identical 25-17 scores before finishing it up with a quick, 25-6 win in the third set.
Tewksbury held a slight advantage in the middle of the first set before Wakefield went on a 9-0 run, turning a 16-15 deficit into a 24-16 lead.
Senior captain Mia Kenny led the Warriors in kills with 9. Her cross-court spike set up by senior captain Tori Grace tied the match at 16, starting Wakefield’s run which essentially won the set.
Grace led the way with 28 assists as the setter and also added 4 aces from the service line.
Wakefield’s coaching staff gave the Player of the Match honors to senior captain Cara Carangelo who was lights out from the service line, collecting an incredible 14 aces. She served during Wakefield’s 9-0 run to take the first set. Carangelo finished with a team-high 17 digs.
Senior captain Lila Arkinstall also had a couple of kills during the 9-0 run. She had 6 kills on the night and added 2 aces and 2 blocks.
Tewksbury jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set but Wakefield battled back, starting another hard-fought set. Mirroring their first set, the Warriors found another level to break a 15-15 tie, closing the set on a 10-2 run.
Senior Addison Butland (6 kills) had a nice kill on a free ball over the net to make it 17-15 and send the Warriors on their way.
A Kenny ace made it 19-15 as Wakefield continued to set the tone from the service line. They finished with 27 aces altogether.
Sophomore Talia Galante (4 kills) had an impressive kill from the outside to make it 20-16. Junior Kiera Thomson (3 aces) had an ace to get to 23 and later another to finish up the set.
Wakefield’s strong play in the second half of their sets is certainly a sign of good things to come this season. That wasn’t required in the third where Wakefield led wire-to-wire to seal an impressive first win of the season.
The Warriors are back at it tonight with a trip to Arlington at 5:30 p.m. They have a huge rivalry matchup against Melrose set for Friday night at 5:30 p.m.
