NORTH READING — The Wakefield High golf is off to an impressive 2-0 start in 2025.

The Warriors tee’d off on their new campaign with victories over Woburn and Watertown last week.

Wakefield topped Woburn 44-28 at the Thomson Country Club in North Reading on Wednesday and followed that up with a 55-17 win over Watertown at the Oakley Country Club on Thursday.

The Warriors were geared up to play an always-strong Woburn team for the first match. The Tanners won last year’s matchup 37.5-34.5.

Wakefield, who went on to win the Middlesex League Freedom Division title and the Div. 2 North Sectional championship last year, made an early statement to the rest of the league with their win over Woburn.

To win the first match of the season is always a difficult task,” said Wakefield head coach Chris Keane. “Our guys did a great job of gaining experience playing under pressure this summer having competed in a bunch of tournament golf. I really think that helped them prepare mentally for our first match. They were confident and focused.”

Leading the way for Wakefield out of the No. 1 spot was junior Patrick Maloney who shot a 34 (2-under par) to win his individual matchup by a score of 7.5-1.5, meaning he won 7 holes against his opponent, tied one and lost one.

Freshman Davin Myette shot a 39 at No. 8, winning his first high school golf matchup, 7-2.

The Warriors were consistent throughout their lineup against Woburn.

Sophomore Michael Yianacopolus (40) won 5-3 at No. 2; junior Brayden Myette (41) won 6.5-2.5 at No. 3; sophomore Ryan Dodge (41) won 5-4 at No. 4 and freshman James Maloney (41) won his first high school matchup, 5-4 at No. 6.

“Patrick (Maloney) played lights out; he and Mikey (Yianacopolus) set the tone for the rest of the lineup,” said Keane. “It was great to see James (Maloney) and Davin (Myette) pull through with big wins in their first ever matches.

“Woburn is a really strong team and they have a competitive lineup where anyone in their starting 8 can go low. I was impressed by how much our pairings worked together throughout the round.”

Wakefield stayed locked in less than 24 hours later when they made the trek to Oakley in Watertown, cruising past the Raiders and improving to 2-0.

Four Warriors shot under a 40 on Oakley’s Par 36.

Dodge led the way with a 35 (1-under par), hitting four birdies and winning his matchup at No. 4, 9-0.

Patrick Maloney and James Maloney both shot a 38. Patrick won, 6.5-2.5 at No. 1 and James won 8-1 at No. 6.

Brayden Myette shot a 39, winning 6.5-2.5 at No. 3.

“It was a treat to play Oakley Country Club,” said Keane. “The golf course was in pristine condition having held the Mass Golf Women’s Mid Amatuer earlier in the week. It gave our guys a good challenge on the greens.

“It was a great team win with 7 of the 8 guys winning their matches.”

In addition to Dodge, the Maloneys and Brayden Myette, Wakefield got wins from Yianacopolus (42, 7.5-1.5), senior Jake Morris (43, 7-2) and junior Ryan McCarthy (49, 7-2).

Wakefield will hunt three more wins this week against Stoneham, Northeast Metro Tech and Burlington.

The Warriors and Spartans will meet tomorrow, 3:30 p.m. at Thomson. They play the Golden Knights on Thursday, 3 p.m. at King Rail Reserve. On Friday, Wakefield travels to Country Club of Billerica to meet the Red Devils at 3:30 p.m. in a huge matchup. Burlington beat Wakefield 40-32 last year.
